Mexico Living Guide

• Mexico is located at a high altitude throughout most of the country, except for coastal areas. After arrival, you may feel fatigued more easily, so please take care of your physical condition.

• Mexico has a very dry climate. This can easily cause throat irritation, so please make a habit of washing your hands and gargling.

• If you have any respiratory conditions, it is recommended that you consult your primary physician before departure.

• To prevent dehydration, make sure to drink sufficient fluids. However, please avoid tap water and beverages other than sealed bottled drinks sold by reliable vendors, as there is a risk of bacterial contamination. (See the “Food and Drink” section for details.)

• Ultraviolet radiation is extremely strong throughout Mexico. Please use sunscreen regularly. On days with strong sunlight, wearing a hat and sunglasses is strongly recommended.

• There are no mandatory vaccinations required for entry into Mexico; however, vaccinations for tetanus, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B are recommended.

• If you are bitten by a dog or stung by a scorpion, seek medical attention immediately. In the case of dog bites, there is a risk of rabies.

• Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, such as malaria and dengue fever, are also common. Please take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Food and Drink

• Street food stalls (such as taco and torta vendors) often have poor sanitary conditions. In addition, raw vegetables and undercooked food can cause food poisoning. It is recommended to avoid eating at street stalls.

• Ice cream sold at street stalls (often called nieve, a type of sherbet) and shaved ice (raspados) may be made using tap water, which poses a risk of food poisoning. The same applies to ice used in some restaurants. If you are unsure, please order drinks without ice.

• Vegetables purchased at supermarkets are also not suitable for raw consumption. When preparing salads, please use vegetable disinfectant solutions available in the produce section of supermarkets.

Accidents and Injuries

• Driving conditions in Mexico are very aggressive. Roads are often poorly maintained, and traffic lights are limited. Many vehicles ignore red lights. Turn signals are frequently not used, and even when they are, drivers may not turn. Please exercise extreme caution, both when driving and when walking.

• Sidewalks are also poorly maintained, with many holes and uneven surfaces. Please watch your step and wear well-fitted, comfortable shoes. Women wearing high heels should be especially careful.

Crime

• As advised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, crime is prevalent in Mexico. Please pay close attention to your personal belongings and avoid flashy or conspicuous clothing.

• Wearing visible valuables such as jewelry (watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings) or branded eyewear can make you a target for crime. When moving around, keep such items in your bag and be mindful of your appearance.
